In conversation, we often find ourselves extolling our own virtues, accomplishments and knowledge. How often, however, do we find a way to implement these skills, this intelligence, in service to others? Recently, I had the opportunity to tour an organization which boasts a staff if persons with various physical and/or mental health disabilities. I was strongly impressed with the sincere work ethic, abilities shown, and productivity at this workplace, and able to quickly sense the important and positive effect this has on our community. The impact of the tour caused me to reflect on my own involvement in making a productive impact to the greater good. Whether you are an artist, plumber, salesperson or mechanic, you possess a significant amount of expertise, flair and skill to strengthen, foster and serve your community (and mankind at large). The personal challenge, is of course, to find the enthusiasm, time and energy to put these to use. For this, you will require some fortitude, cheerfulness and goodness of heart, which can all be found within those “virtues, accomplishments and knowledge” you know you already possess. The fruition of these is in how you apply them. Challenge yourself to volunteer service to others in your community. Look for, and find a group or organization that believes in, and productively serves these ideals, and then volunteer! Offer them your unique skills and talents. They are greatly needed, in so many ways. You will be greeted with thankfulness, treated with respect, and be highly valued for your contribution. If you have ever thought about volunteering, keep thinking! If you are thinking about volunteering, start volunteering! The personal benefits can be, and are, life-changing for yourself and so many others. You are the most valuable resource out there!
